Welcome to Glenwood’s
website! Glenwood School for Boys and Girls is a children’s
charity that serves good kids from disadvantaged homes by
providing them with a safer place to live, helping them improve
their grades and other important life skills, and supporting
them as they grow. Thanks to the sole support we receive from
community-minded individuals and businesses, we are able to
provide our services year-round to the families who need us.
Glenwood is 121-years old and while we continue to model old
fashion values for our children, the administration has always
sought to keep up with the needs of our changing society –
transforming Glenwood as necessary over the century from manual
and agriculture training to academics. During the last five
years, we have shifted our focus again but this time from
serving the child in need to working with and developing the
entire family unit. Today, both our Rathje and South Campuses
have residential cottages for boys and for girls. Glenwood
is a resource for lower-income families who need to work and
they have come to rely upon us for the resources we provide
the entire family.
Kids come to us confused, with low self-esteem, and often
with above average ability but below average grades. After
a few months at Glenwood, thanks to our classroom teachers
and our Learning Resource staff – backed by houseparents
who work with children before and after school, not only do
our students catch up but also they often exceed their grade
level. Recently, we’ve had more and more students testing
in the 90th percentile in math and science. Glenwood changes
children’s lives!
Glenwood provides a unique opportunity for donors to directly
connect with a child. Child sponsorships, $15,000 annually
to cover expenses such as food, housing and books, enable
a donor to make a personal investment in the lives of the
children they help support. What’s more, through special
campus events and tours, donors can visit with the children
they support and mark their progress. I know of no other children’s
charity where a donor can literally see his or her investment
grow!
Just imagine what a child’s opportunities can be thanks
to Glenwood School! I invite you to visit one of our campuses
and please join us for one of the special events shown on
our home page. I promise you will be delighted when you see
these great kids in action. I watch them and can’t help
but see potential. Come and see for yourself.
On behalf of students and staff at Glenwood, thank you for
visiting our web site, and thanks for your interest in Glenwood
School.
Sincerely,
John Irwin
